mercado libre's second semester transparency report 2023

Mercado Libre brings together efforts towards an increasingly safe and transparent e-commerce ecosystem

In the Transparency Report for the second semester of 2023, Mercado Libre discloses updated records on its four pillars: personal data protection and intellectual property rights, infringing listing detection, and information request from relevant authorities. Several entities in the region highlight how the platform has helped create a digital environment protecting both buyers and sellers.

Mercado Libre issues its Transparency Report for the second semester of 2023, containing relevant data and information on its operations based on four pillars:

  • Request of information from competent authorities.
  • Infringing listings.
  • Intellectual property right protection.
  • Personal data protection.

In this report release, both public and private bodies such as ARCSA (Ecuadorian National Agency for Regulation, Control and Surveillance),  SIC (Colombian Industrial and Commercial Superintendence), and (regional) React Americas, highlight Mercado Libre’s ongoing contribution to generate a safe ecosystem, which protects buyers and sellers.

“We are aware of the big challenge we face towards an increasing transparency and clarity in our operations on a daily basis. However, that is precisely what Mercado Libre knows how to do: challenging ourselves above and beyond limitations and providing excellent execution in order to evolve, impact, and keep on changing millions of people’s lives throughout Latin America. Within that context, our objective of clarifying certain metrics of our operations remains invariable, so as to continue offering the best experience for our users and building trust in society as a whole,"  stated Federico Deya, Director of Legal Affairs, Mercado Libre.

Main report data

  • Mercado Libre immediately answered 53,757 information requirements from several authorities in the region. Over 98% of the processed requirements were answered providing the information requested.
  • Out of a total of 651 millions of active postings during the semester, only 0.84% were removed due to infringement to our listing policies. From such total, 97% of those removed contents were detected by Mercado Libre’s own teams and systems.
  • The Brand Protection Program (BPP) is an exclusive program for intellectual property rights holders (IPR) intended to contribute with Right holders, generate trust in all the stakeholders of our ecosystem, encourage a virtuous win-win cycle for all the actors, and build a safe and trustworthy operating space, while ensuring the best experience for buyers. IPR related reports amounted to 917,520. Mercado Libre’s own teams and systems were able to detect other 3,817,214 infringing listings, accounting for  87% of the contents removed for such IPR related infringements.
  • During this period, 1,108,383 ARCO rights were exercised, which accounts for almost an additional 10.5% as compared to the first semester of 2023. In this sense, 90% of such exercise of rights was managed through our automated tools, thanks to the Privacy Hub allowing users to have easy access to exercising such rights and providing a faster and more efficient response.
